You do not need to buy PlayStation Plus or GTA+ just to play the announced GTA VI single-player game on PS5. The game purchase, Sony’s subscription and Rockstar’s membership are three separate things. The current PlayStation listing describes one player and enables offline play.
There is a GTA+ month offered with eligible digital purchases. Claiming a membership bonus does not mean GTA VI itself becomes a subscription game, and it does not mean the campaign requires that membership.
This guide was checked on 14 October 2026. It explains the current offer, where to check renewal and how to avoid paying for a service you thought was part of the game.
Three purchases that are easy to mix up
| Item | What it is | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| GTA VI | The game and the edition you buy | Platform, edition, owning account and included content |
| PlayStation Plus | A PlayStation subscription with benefits such as cloud-save storage | The benefits you use, plan and next payment |
| GTA+ | Rockstar’s optional membership with its own benefits and games library | Current benefits, account, platform and renewal |
The names make the confusion understandable. Both subscriptions use “Plus”, and the game page can show a membership offer beside a game edition. Slow down for one minute at the checkout and name each item in plain language.
For example: “I am buying the game once, I already use Plus for saves, and I will decide separately whether to claim GTA+.” That sentence makes the payment choices much easier to follow.
You do not need to subscribe to every service a console displays. Each one should have a job you actually want it to do.
What buying GTA VI gives you
Buying the full digital game or redeeming its full-game code adds the relevant licence to the account used. The licence is the account’s right to access that purchase. The installation is the set of files stored on the console. They are connected, but they are not the same thing.
That distinction answers several common worries. Removing game files to make room is different from giving away ownership. Copying files to another drive is different from giving another person a new copy. Seeing an icon on a household console does not prove that every profile bought the game.
Keep the purchase receipt and know which account made the order. You do not need a paid membership just to identify the owner. If the purchase is missing from one profile, check the buying account before paying again.
Also check that you bought the full game rather than an upgrade or extra. A store page can list related products close together. “Ultimate Edition” and “Ultimate Edition Upgrade” are not interchangeable names for the same purchase. Read what is included rather than deciding from a large picture.
For a retail order, read the boxed-version guide before redeeming its code. The person who should own the digital purchase should be clear before anyone enters it.
What PlayStation Plus does here
PlayStation Plus is Sony’s subscription service. Its benefits vary by plan, and they are separate from a full game you purchase outright. One useful benefit for a PS5 owner is cloud storage for saved progress.
You might choose Plus because you use those benefits across several games. You should not add it to the GTA VI bill merely because another GTA title uses online multiplayer.
Sony says Plus is required for most paid PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer games, with exceptions. That general rule does not turn an announced single-player game into multiplayer or create a subscription requirement for its campaign.
If Rockstar announces another mode later, judge that mode from its own product requirements. A guess about a future online service is not a reason to buy a subscription now.
The question to ask is practical: “Which Plus benefit do I need this month?” If you cannot name one, look at your account and the actual service description before choosing a plan.
Cloud saves are separate from the game download
A cloud save holds progress, not the whole installation. A bigger game drive and a Plus cloud-save entitlement therefore solve different problems.
If you are changing consoles, check the progress itself before letting go of the old PS5. Having Plus is only part of that plan. You also need to know that the progress you want has reached the cloud and that the intended account can use it.
Our save-sync guide explains that check. Keep it as a separate task from downloading GTA VI. A game can be installed correctly while a save copy still needs attention.
If you are staying on the same console, do not assume buying Plus is the only way to free installation space. Start by moving or removing game files you can replace. Avoid deleting saved progress to make room.
A useful note names both tasks: “installation space ready” and “existing saves checked”. One tick marked “storage done” can hide which of the two you actually completed.
What GTA+ means, and what it does not mean
GTA+ is Rockstar’s optional membership. Its benefits include a rotating games library and benefits for GTA Online. Rockstar says library access depends on the title remaining included and the membership staying active. The purchase platform also affects which console titles you can access.
That is a different kind of access from buying a full game. A membership catalogue is a current offer you check; it is not a promise that every Rockstar release is included forever.
Most importantly, a GTA+ month on the GTA VI order is not proof that the membership includes GTA VI. The direction of the offer matters: you buy an eligible game and may claim a membership benefit. That does not mean buying the membership replaces the game purchase.
Check the current GTA+ benefits and games if you are considering using it. Decide from what is available on your platform and useful to you, rather than from the shared GTA name.
If you want only the GTA VI campaign, there is no need to turn the membership offer into another purchase decision before you can understand your game order.
The GTA+ preorder month and its deadlines
Sony’s current offer terms say eligible digital Standard or Ultimate purchases made before 20 November 2026 can claim one GTA+ month at no extra cost. The claim deadline is 31 March 2027. New, lapsed and existing subscribers can qualify; an existing subscriber can add the offered month to the current subscription.
Claiming requires a separate transaction through the GTA+ product page. The offer is once per account, subject to age and country eligibility. It continues into paid monthly membership unless canceled before the next payment. The confirmation shows the continuation date.
Read the official claim instructions and eligibility terms for the store country you use.
Those details create two separate decisions: whether to claim, and whether to keep paying afterward. The first does not answer the second.
Choose the month you can actually use
Do not claim in a hurry just because the game order is complete. Check the offer’s deadline and the transaction screen, then think about when you will have time to use the current benefits.
For example, a player who is away for several weeks may get little value from starting an optional membership immediately. Another person who already uses GTA+ may find adding the offered month straightforward. Their situations differ even though they bought the same game.
Keep the dates clear. The game release date, the offer’s claim deadline and your next membership payment date are not one date. Put the actual continuation date from your account in your calendar if you need a reminder.
Do not store card information or an unused code in a public checklist. A simple private note such as “GTA+ continuation checked” is enough.
If you decide to skip the offer, that is still a complete decision. A bonus you do not use should not make you feel that the game purchase is unfinished.
How to check or cancel a PlayStation subscription
On PS5, open Settings → Users and Accounts → Account → Payment and Subscriptions → Subscriptions. Choose the service to inspect its next payment date or cancellation option.
For a membership purchased through PlayStation, this is where you manage the recurring service. Deleting a game icon, uninstalling the app or ceasing to play does not cancel a subscription.
If you want to stop renewal, complete the cancellation and check the resulting status. Sony says cancellation takes effect from the next payment date. Keep any confirmation so you can see what you changed.
Cancel the named service you intend to stop. PlayStation Plus and GTA+ have separate entries and purposes. Stopping one does not mean the other has stopped.
If the service does not appear, check the account and the place it was purchased. Do not start a second subscription while trying to find the first. Look at the receipt and management route first.
You can use Sony’s subscription management instructions while doing this.
A shared PS5 does not share every subscription benefit
A household can have one buying account and several playing profiles. Console Sharing and Offline Play can allow purchased games and selected Plus benefits to be used by others on the enabled PS5.
However, Sony does not include online save storage among the Plus benefits you can share. One person’s Plus payment should not be treated as proof that another profile’s progress has a cloud copy.
Imagine two adults who play separately. One owns the game and has Plus; the other plays on a personal profile. The second player should inspect that profile’s save protection rather than assuming the buyer’s subscription covers it.
Do not solve this by having everybody play under the buyer’s account. That mixes progress and makes later choices harder. The household setup guide helps you separate access from each person’s saves.
Treat account-specific subscription offers with the same care. Check which account earned and claimed the offer instead of assuming a console-wide icon proves everybody received it.
If you see an unexpected payment or missing benefit
Start with the receipt and subscription screen. Write down the service name, purchasing account, date and amount shown. You can investigate without publishing payment information.
If you meant to stop renewal, confirm whether cancellation was completed and which payment date applied. Do not assume a subscription stopped because you no longer used its games.
If an offer is missing, compare the purchase type, account, store country and eligibility with the official terms. A retail order is not automatically the same transaction as a PlayStation Store digital order.
For a membership benefit that is absent inside another game, check the actual membership and platform before changing GTA VI files. Reinstalling GTA VI cannot explain whether a separate recurring service was claimed.
Finish with three clear answers: which account owns GTA VI, which subscriptions you chose to keep, and when any next payment is due. That keeps the game you want and the services you pay for under your control.
