Move your PS5 saves safely: check cloud sync before changing consoles

The useful answer

Check the save on the console where you last played, then verify its cloud sync under the same account. Upload means console to cloud; download means cloud to console. Keep the old console intact until you open the game on the new PS5 and see the progress you wanted.

Before replacing your PS5, check the save on the console where you last played. Then confirm the copy you intend to bring to the new one. Keep the old console and its data until you have opened the game on the new PS5 and seen the right progress.

This matters even when your games already appear in the new console’s library. The library tells you about access to games. It does not prove that last night’s progress has arrived. An installation can be complete while the save you want is still on the other machine.

If you are preparing a new PS5 for GTA VI, use this process to protect the games you already play. This is a guide to Sony’s PS5 saved-data tools, not a promise about a separate GTA VI account-transfer feature or progress from another GTA game.

Start with the person who made the progress

Check which profile you used to play. In a household, the person who bought the game may be different from the person who made the save. Moving the buyer’s data will not answer a missing-progress problem for someone else’s profile.

Make a short note for each important game:

  • The player profile you used.
  • The console where you last played.
  • What progress you expect to see, such as a chapter, level or saved position.
  • Roughly when you finished that session.

You do not need to record passwords or account recovery details on a shared checklist. A harmless label that you recognize is enough.

The progress note is especially useful when the game has several save slots. A newer date can belong to a test session or a different playthrough. Decide what you want to keep before comparing files, rather than letting the timestamp make the whole decision for you.

Finish playing and make sure the game saved

Use the game’s own save method and wait for any saving activity to finish. A character standing where you left them in a suspended session is not proof that a new save has been written.

If you have a choice of manual save slots, identify the one you want. If the game saves automatically, think about the last completed checkpoint or other visible sign of saved progress. Follow that game’s instructions if you are unsure when it records progress.

Then close the game before working through the transfer. Avoid starting a fresh session on the other console while you are still deciding which copy is right. Two changing copies are harder to compare than one finished session and one clearly older save.

This is a good time to slow down. Another five minutes checking the old console is much easier than trying to recover something after a trade-in or reset.

Check cloud sync on the old PS5

PlayStation Plus cloud storage is a subscription feature for saved data. On the game tile, press Options > Check Sync Status of Saved Data. You can also check games through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > View Sync Status.

For automatic PS5 syncing, Sony provides Auto-Sync Saved Data in the PS5 saved-data settings. Rest-mode syncing also needs the console set to stay connected to the internet and the required automatic-update settings enabled.

Read the result. Being signed in, having Wi-Fi and paying for a subscription are conditions you may need; they are not a receipt showing that your last session reached the cloud.

If the status shows an error, keep the local save. Read the message and check the connection or service named before trying again. A sync problem gives you a reason to preserve the old console, not a reason to wipe it.

For the actual upload and download controls, use Sony’s cloud-storage instructions alongside the menu on your PS5.

Understand the direction before confirming

Upload sends a console copy to the cloud. Download brings a cloud copy to the console. Read any replacement message carefully; the destination is the place whose copy may change.

Suppose you played on the living-room PS5 on Tuesday evening, but the cloud copy you recognize is from Monday. Your first task is to preserve and confirm Tuesday’s progress. Downloading Monday’s copy onto the living-room PS5 is not a way to protect Tuesday.

Now suppose Tuesday’s save is already confirmed in the cloud and the new PS5 has an older copy. The task on the new PS5 is different: obtain the intended cloud save there. The same two devices and same game name appear in both cases, but the right direction has changed.

Do not rush through a conflict using a rule such as “cloud is always safer” or “the newest file always wins.” Location and date are clues. Your knowledge of the session tells you whether the copy is the one you want.

If the choices are unclear, cancel the prompt if possible and write down what each one says. Getting clarity before replacement is safer than experimenting with the only copy of progress you value.

Verify the result inside the game on the new console

On the new PS5, sign in with the account that made the save. Obtain the intended saved data through the chosen cloud or transfer method, and make sure the matching game is available.

Open it and inspect a recognizable detail: the expected chapter, character, completed task or manual save slot. A trophy list, installed icon or a file with the right game name does not show that the game loaded the progress you meant to bring.

If you see the wrong progress, stop before playing further. A new session can make the dates harder to interpret. Note what loaded and return to the saved-data comparison while the old console remains available.

Also check that you opened the intended version of the game. When a title has separate PS4 and PS5 versions, a guide for the game’s own conversion or transfer process may be needed. Do not assume a saved-data copy automatically converts between versions.

Once the correct progress is visible, repeat the check for the other games that matter. Protecting one game’s save does not prove the rest of your library followed it.

What if you do not have PlayStation Plus?

Cloud syncing is not the only way to move PS5 data. Sony supports transferring data from another PS5 and making a broader PS5 backup on a suitable USB drive. Choose the method that matches what you are moving.

Transfer directly when both consoles are available

Sony’s transfer process uses the source and destination consoles on the same network. Prepare them with current system software, the relevant account signed in, and trophies synced. On the destination PS5, the route after setup is Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.

Follow the on-screen instructions and Sony’s linked procedure. Do not turn the consoles off or change network settings during the transfer. Check Downloads/Uploads for progress; some data can still be transferring after the destination restarts.

This can be a sensible choice when you have both machines together and want more than one saved-data file moved. Plan enough time to complete and inspect it before arranging collection of the old console.

Use a console backup when that fits your move

Sony’s backup tool can include saved data, settings, captures, games and apps. It uses a supported FAT32 or exFAT USB drive through Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.

That is a broader backup operation, not the same as exporting one PS5 save like a PS4 save. Most importantly, restoring a PS5 backup erases the data currently on the destination console. Read Sony’s full backup and restore guide before selecting Restore.

A drive used as USB extended storage for game installations is formatted differently from a backup drive. Backups also exclude games and apps stored on M.2 or extended USB storage, and trophies need separate syncing. Sony has account conditions for restoring on another console.

For someone whose new console already contains another person’s progress, those restore consequences matter. Do not choose Restore simply because you found a USB device labelled “PS5.” First find out what is on the destination and whether everyone involved is ready for that operation.

Moving game files does not finish the save job

You might move an M.2 SSD or reconnect a USB drive and see a large library return quickly. That can solve the installation part of the move. It does not, by itself, prove your current saved progress is present.

Treat three questions separately: can the account access the game, are the game files available, and is the desired progress on this console? Answering the first two still leaves the third to check.

Our storage guide deals with installations and capacity. Use it when you need room. Keep this guide focused on the progress that would be difficult or impossible to replace by downloading again.

If a save is missing, narrow the problem first

Start with the profile. Is this the same player who made the progress? Next check the game and version. Finally check the saved-data copies and any unfinished transfer or sync message.

If the old console still has the right progress, preserve it while you choose the appropriate next step. Avoid deleting files to make a screen look tidy. Avoid launching repeated new games in the hope that the missing save will appear.

If the old console is unavailable, inspect whatever cloud copy or backup you already have. Do not assume that subscribing now can recreate progress that was never uploaded, or that reinstalling a game creates a missing local save. If you need support, describe the actual copies available and the exact error, keeping account secrets private.

Retire the old console only after the checks are complete

Before a sale, trade-in or handover, make sure every player has checked the games they care about on the destination PS5. Allow time for a person who was away during setup to check their own progress too.

Keep a simple record of the result: “correct save opened on new PS5.” That is more useful than “transfer done,” because it states what you verified.

Then handle the old console’s account removal and reset through Sony’s appropriate handover instructions. The order matters: preserve, transfer, open and confirm, then retire the old device. It keeps your recovery options available until you have evidence that you no longer need them.
