GTA 6 preload in PS5 rest mode: setup and fixes

The useful answer

Select GTA VI for automatic download, enable Stay Connected to the Internet in rest mode and check free space on the intended drive. Save any open game before unattended installation. Then verify the transfer itself when preloading begins.

Your PS5 can download GTA 6 in rest mode when the preload is available, the title is selected, the console stays connected and the destination has room. Rest mode alone does not guarantee any of those things.

GTA VI preloading is announced from 12 November 2026, ahead of the 19 November release. Before preload day, a waiting download can be completely normal. After the files arrive, a release countdown can be normal too.

This guide, checked on 14 October 2026, helps you set up unattended downloading and find the reason if it does not happen. It also separates two easily confused choices: downloading update files and installing them.

The short setup

Do these checks while you are beside the console:

  1. Save the game you are currently playing and finish the session.
  2. Open GTA VI on the account that owns the preorder.
  3. Check its automatic-download content selection.
  4. Confirm the installation drive and available space.
  5. Enable the PS5’s internet connection in rest mode.
  6. Choose the update behaviour you want.
  7. Put the console into rest mode and check the result later.

The last step matters. A setting is an instruction; the download screen tells you whether that instruction produced a result.

If you are preparing weeks early, write “selected, waiting for preload” in your launch desk. Reserve “download complete” for the point when the console actually shows completion.

First, check that the purchase can preload

Sign in to the account that bought GTA VI through PlayStation Store. Open Game Library, select the preorder, then select the release countdown. Sony’s procedure shows the included content and its download checkboxes there.

Check the game content you want and confirm the selection. Do not assume a preorder confirmation email means you already made this choice on the console.

A retail box takes a different route because you need its download code first. A shipping receipt is not yet a redeemed game licence. See the boxed-code guide if that is how you ordered.

If the game is visible only because another household account owns it, check the purchase with that account. Keep the buyer and the playing profile separate in your notes so you do not investigate a missing preorder under the wrong name.

There is no benefit in repeating this selection every day. Once you have checked it, the next useful check is when preloading becomes available, or if your order or console setup changes.

Keep the PS5 connected while it rests

Open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.

If you also want to wake the console through the network with PlayStation App or Remote Play, Sony provides Enable Turning On PS5 from Network in that menu. This is a separate choice from simply keeping an existing download connected.

Rest mode and turning the console off are different power states. Select rest mode deliberately when you want background work to continue. Do not switch the console off at the wall afterward.

Also think about what happens to the router overnight. If someone routinely unplugs it or a scheduled setting disables the connection, the PS5 cannot keep downloading through that gap. The console’s internet checkbox cannot override a disconnected router.

You do not need to leave a television showing the download all night. The practical concern is the console’s power and network connection, not whether you are watching a progress bar.

Check the drive that will receive the game

In Settings → Storage → Installation Location, inspect the selected destination for PS5 games. Then check free space on that same drive.

This sounds obvious, but it is an easy mistake with several storage devices. You might see plenty of space on an M.2 SSD while the installation is still aimed at nearly full console storage.

Use the requirement shown by the real download. Do not turn an unofficial size estimate into a reason to remove hundreds of gigabytes or buy equipment. You can choose an older installation to move if needed without touching it yet.

A compatible M.2 SSD can be a playable location for PS5 games. USB extended storage is useful for holding PS5 game files between sessions, but it is not a direct playing location for them. If you need space, moving another PS5 installation to USB storage may free the playable space you already own.

Do not format an existing drive merely because the GTA VI download has not started. Formatting is a separate operation that removes the drive’s data. Read the storage guide before making changes you cannot easily undo.

Choose whether updates should install while you are away

Go to Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Automatic Updates. The important choices are Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.

Downloading brings update files to the console. Installing applies the update. Sony says to use only Auto-Download if you do not want a suspended game closed by automatic installation.

For a finished session, unattended installation may suit you. If you expect to return to an open game exactly where you left it, understand the tradeoff first. Rest mode should not be your only protection for unsaved progress.

This is why the first step in the setup is to save. A console can be correctly preparing an update and still interrupt the suspended session you hoped to resume. Neither a charged controller nor a good internet connection protects an unsaved moment.

The preorder content selection and automatic-update settings do different jobs. Selecting updates does not prove the initial GTA VI download was selected, and selecting the game does not explain every later update choice.

Test the setup before the large download

You can make a small test with a download you already want, such as an available update for a game you own. Avoid buying or downloading an unwanted game just to test a setting.

While the PS5 is awake, confirm that the chosen transfer starts. Note its progress, enter rest mode and check later whether it moved forward. This checks the setup in your home without depending on GTA VI being available yet.

If it works while awake but stops in rest mode, focus on the rest-mode connection and power conditions. If it fails while awake too, begin with the actual error, connection and storage instead.

Keep the test simple. Do not change DNS, replace cables, move the router and switch several settings at once. One change followed by one check gives you a much clearer answer.

A successful test is helpful evidence, but it is not a promise about every later transfer. A full drive, service issue or power interruption can still affect preload day. You are reducing uncertainty, not creating a guarantee.

If GTA VI did not download overnight

Start by opening the queue and reading the status. The fact that the files are missing tells you the outcome; the queue may tell you why.

What you find What to check next
No GTA VI transfer listed Purchase account, preload availability and content selection
A space error The selected drive and its actual free space
A paused transfer The pause state and any message beside it
A network error Connection while awake, then rest-mode connection
A request for your attention The exact on-screen request
Completed files and a countdown Release timing rather than download settings

Work through the branch that matches your screen. A countdown does not need a storage repair. A storage error does not need an account password reset.

If there is an error code, keep it with a short note of what happened. Include whether the failure occurred while awake or in rest mode. That detail helps you or support avoid starting the investigation from nothing.

For a suspected platform outage, check PlayStation service status. If the relevant service is having trouble, leave a working local setup alone and try again after the service recovers.

If the download starts but seems slow

Give the progress display time to settle before deciding it is stuck. A remaining-time estimate can rise or fall as the transfer changes. Look for actual progress over a reasonable period rather than reacting to one estimate.

Check whether other large downloads or streams are using the home connection. If people agree to pause a nonessential transfer, that can make a cleaner download window without buying anything.

If you already know Wi-Fi drops near the console, a practical Ethernet connection may help. If Wi-Fi has been reliable, there is no reason to rebuild the network just because the game is large.

Avoid repeatedly canceling the transfer to chase a better estimate. You may lose progress or create more work. A temporary pause, a slow transfer and a complete failure are different situations.

Likewise, a high advertised internet speed does not guarantee that every server sends files at that rate. Before paying for a faster plan, identify whether the actual problem is your connection, Wi-Fi, storage, a service issue or simply waiting for availability.

If there was a power cut

Check the PS5 when power is stable again and follow its on-screen instructions. Then inspect the download status. Do not assume all files were lost, and do not remove the installation before the console tells you what state it is in.

If the queue resumes, let it continue. If an error remains, use that error as the next step. Keep the account, drive and selected content the same unless there is evidence that one is wrong.

A home with frequent interruptions needs a more generous download window. Starting early is useful because it gives you time to inspect and recover; it is not a reason to leave an unverified transfer until the evening of release.

After the preload completes

A finished download can remain locked until release. That is the expected separation between files being present and the game being available to play.

Keep the installation intact, charge the controller and check the queue again before the first session you have planned. An update may still need attention.

Use your own purchase’s countdown for access timing. Our release and preload timeline explains why another country’s screenshot is not a reliable clock for your account.

Your final note can be simple: “download complete on console storage, waiting for release”. That gives you a clear handover. The PS5 has finished the preparation it can do, and you have avoided turning a normal wait into an unnecessary repair.
