GTA 6 on PS5 or PS5 Pro: should you upgrade or keep your console?

The useful answer

GTA VI supports PS5 and is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced. If you own a working PS5, you can prepare it without upgrading. Choose Pro for benefits you can confirm and value across your games; the enhancement label alone does not establish GTA VI's frame rate or graphics modes.

If you already own a working PS5, you do not need a PS5 Pro simply to be on a supported GTA 6 console. PlayStation lists GTA VI for PS5, with PS5 Pro Enhanced support. PS4 is not supported. The useful decision is whether a Pro offers something you value enough to justify the extra cost.

For someone buying their first PS5, both the standard console and Pro deserve a place in the comparison. Your screen, existing games, need for a disc drive and overall spending limit matter as well as GTA VI. The highest-priced option is not automatically the best fit for every room or player.

Official game and hardware details in this guide were checked on 14 October 2026. The current GTA VI listing confirms Pro enhancement support, but the official sources cited here do not provide a measured PS5-versus-Pro frame-rate comparison for the finished game.

A quick choice based on your situation

Your situation Sensible starting point What could change the choice
You own a healthy PS5 and want to play GTA VI Prepare your current console A confirmed Pro benefit you want enough to pay for
Your main problem is lack of storage Manage space or price compatible expansion Other reasons for replacing the console too
You are buying your first PS5 Compare complete setups at local prices Your display, other games and disc needs
You want a specific GTA VI performance mode Wait for clear game-specific evidence A named mode and reliable results
Your current console is failing Compare repair and replacement routes Condition, support and total cost
You play many Pro-enhanced games already Include those games in the value calculation How much their improvements matter to you

You may fit more than one row. Someone with an ageing console and several games they want to replay has a different decision from someone replacing a healthy PS5 solely because of a guessed GTA VI frame rate.

What PS5 Pro Enhanced does and does not tell you

The official GTA VI page carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label. That establishes support for enhancements on the Pro. It does not tell you the exact resolution, every visual option or a guaranteed frame rate in every scene.

Sony’s PS5 Pro hardware page describes technologies including PSSR, advanced ray tracing and higher-performance options in compatible games. It also states that enhanced features vary by game. PSSR is Sony’s image-reconstruction technology; in simple terms, it helps supported games build a detailed output image. Ray tracing is a way to calculate effects such as lighting and reflections.

Those capabilities tell you what developers can use. They do not prove which combination GTA VI will offer. Avoid taking a frame-rate claim from another game’s Pro update and applying it to this one.

If one result is essential to your purchase, make it a clear question. “Will this exact GTA VI mode deliver the experience I want?” is more useful than “Is Pro more powerful?” The hardware answer alone does not settle the game-specific question.

If you own a PS5, find the actual obstacle first

Spend a few minutes checking what stops your current setup from being ready. Can you sign into the account that will use the game? Is the console working normally? Is there space on a supported installation destination? Can you read the picture and follow the sound from your seat?

If all those answers are yes, you have a workable preparation plan. Keep the console, deal with the download and licence when appropriate, and make any comfort adjustments you need. Our console preparation guide takes you through that work.

If one answer is no, name the problem before choosing a purchase. A full drive is a storage problem. Cropped menus are a display-fitting problem. An awkward controller is an input problem. Replacing the entire console can cost much more than dealing with the actual cause.

For example, suppose you like your present picture and controls but frequently delete games to make room. Compare storage management and compatible expansion with the complete upgrade cost. Do not assume that a console change is the cheapest way to gain space.

A Pro can still be an enjoyable purchase. The point is to know why you want it. “I want its confirmed benefits in several games and can afford the whole setup” is a sounder basis than “My current PS5 probably won’t be enough,” when official platform support already answers that concern.

Check what your screen can show

Your display is part of the experience, including its selected HDMI input and any receiver or soundbar between it and the console. A feature printed on a television box may need the correct input and settings before it is available in your setup.

Inspect the PS5’s connected-device information, then use the HDR and display guide to fix obvious problems first. Do not compare a badly configured current setup against an imagined perfectly configured new one.

Screen size, viewing distance and personal preference affect what you notice. A detailed image change that excites you in a close comparison may matter less from your sofa. Conversely, somebody using a large screen at a comfortable distance may value image clarity strongly. Neither preference needs an invented GTA VI benchmark to be valid.

A 4K television is not the same thing as a promise that every game renders every frame at native 4K. A 120 Hz screen is not proof of a 120 fps GTA VI mode. Keep those terms attached to what they describe: display output capability and actual game behaviour.

You also do not need to replace a clear, usable screen just because you buy a Pro. First identify the benefit you expect to see. If buying the console would also force a display purchase, include both costs before deciding.

If this is your first PS5, compare complete setups

Start with the games and equipment you will use over the next year or two. If GTA VI is the main reason for buying, a standard PS5 remains a supported choice. If you also care about several confirmed Pro enhancements in other games, include those in the value you expect to receive.

Do not compare one bare console price with another bundle that includes equipment you need. Make the comparison fair: console, game, any necessary disc drive, storage and other items you actually intend to use. Check current prices and availability in your country rather than converting an old launch price.

Separate essentials from nice additions. A comfortable place to play and a working display are essential. A second controller, extra storage or a premium headset may be useful, but whether you need them depends on your household and library.

A used console needs a separate condition check. Ask what is included, inspect its operation where possible and understand the seller’s return or support arrangement. Games shown on a previous owner’s account are not the same thing as licences bought on your own account. Do not build the purchase value around continued access to a stranger’s profile.

Think about disc games beyond GTA VI

A disc drive matters if you own supported disc games or want compatible movie playback. PS5 Pro’s disc drive is a separate purchase. Check the precise bundle you are considering rather than assuming that a pictured drive is included.

Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions identify compatible console model groups and explain the internet connection needed to pair the drive during setup. Compatibility should be checked by model, especially when buying a used console or separate drive.

Do not treat a drive as extra storage. It reads supported discs; the console still needs installation space for games. Also distinguish a game’s packaging from what is inside it. Before buying a boxed edition, check whether that particular product supplies a disc, a download code or other contents. Our boxed-version guide explains the GTA VI format question separately.

If you have a large disc library, losing access to it can be a bigger practical change than a visual improvement. Include the drive in the upgrade calculation and confirm which games you will use afterward. If you buy games digitally, your priorities may be different.

Storage: compare usable space and your real library

PS5 Pro includes a 2 TB SSD, with part of the capacity reserved for system software and other functions. Do not expect the full number on the box to appear as free game-installation space.

Different PS5 models and existing expansion arrangements can make the comparison less simple than “old console versus new console.” Check the available space on your own PS5 and the games you want to keep installed. A console that already has suitable expansion should be compared as the setup you own, rather than as an empty original specification.

There are two different reasons to buy storage: keeping more games ready and avoiding repeated downloads. Neither automatically means higher GTA VI frame rates. A storage purchase should solve a capacity or library-management problem.

Use the space and saves guide before deleting anything. Installed game files, saved progress and account licences are different things. Clearing the wrong item can create a problem that has nothing to do with the hardware comparison.

Include the cost of moving, not just buying

An upgrade also means setting up another console. You need the right accounts, access to your saved progress and a plan for other people who use the current PS5. Do not sell or reset the original console before checking that the new one has what you need.

Sony supports PS5-to-PS5 data transfer. Its transfer instructions cover preparation and the destination console’s Data Transfer menu. Keep both systems available while doing the required checks, and follow the transfer instructions instead of interrupting the process to try other network changes.

After moving, open a familiar game under the correct profile and confirm its expected progress. Then check sharing and offline access for anyone else in the household. A successful sign-in alone does not prove that every player’s setup is finished.

If you use cloud saves, read our save-sync guide before choosing between local and cloud copies. Hardware replacement should not turn into a guess about which save is newer.

Compare the extra cost with the benefit you want

For an owner upgrading, a useful calculation is:

Extra spending = new setup cost + required additions − money actually received for old equipment.

Use the trade-in or resale amount you can really obtain, after fees or missing items, rather than an optimistic listing price. Keep enough time to verify your transfer before handing over the old console. A slightly higher sale figure is less useful if it forces you to rush the move.

For a first-time buyer, compare the complete standard-PS5 setup with the complete Pro setup. The difference is what you pay for the Pro choice. Then ask what confirmed benefits you get across the games you actually expect to play.

There is no universal correct amount to spend. Someone playing often across several enhanced games may value the difference more than someone buying one title for occasional evenings. The honest question is whether you will enjoy what the extra money buys, without leaving essential parts of the setup unresolved.

When waiting is the better choice

Wait if your decision depends on an exact GTA VI mode that has not been established by the sources you trust. Waiting is useful when it gives you evidence that can change the purchase. It is less useful when you already know both your budget and what confirmed hardware benefits you want.

For a later performance comparison, look for the console, game version, named mode and actual observations. A trailer upload, a screen’s information panel or a social-media number without a method is weaker evidence than a clear test.

When the results arrive, ask whether they answer your question. A close-up image comparison may tell you about fine detail while saying little about the part of play you care about. Match the evidence to the reason you considered upgrading.

Make a choice you can explain in one sentence

Try one of these: “I am keeping my PS5 because it is supported and ready.” “I am choosing Pro because I value its confirmed improvements across my games.” Or: “I am waiting because my purchase depends on a particular GTA VI result.”

Each is a complete decision with a useful next step. Write yours in the launch desk, solve the real setup obstacles and revisit the choice if clear new information changes it. You can be excited about GTA VI without turning every uncertainty into another purchase.
